I think the target might be anyone,
because if people started reading books, then they would have more knowledge
then the people that do not read books, the power that he gave them was letting
them control him, and by saying “a book is a loaded gun in the house next
door”, that could mean who ever is reading the books it is making their life
all about books and is loosing sight of the world they live in. I think that they
thought it would be easier for everyone to be on the same page, meaning
everyone would all know the same thing no one would know more then the other. I
can see this happening now to a certain degree, there are things that the
government would like to keep hidden form us so that no one would know more
then they want us to know. In the book they burned the books to keep them from
finding out the truth, or what life could be, or what life was. Now they
don’t have to burn books because society has new ways of finding out the truth
of what was, what is, and what will be. I think the world would be a better
place if everyone had free will to find out what they wanted to know and to
keep hidden what they didn’t what to know without having to worry about what
would happen if they knew to much.

“A book is a loaded gun in the house next door...Who knows who might be the target of the well-read man?” (Mayela)
The quote that’s
mentioned by Captain Beatty is a little quite confusing. I think what its
trying to explain is that you never know the truth and you don’t know what is
coming to you in life, be prepared for whatever comes your way. The books are
given the power of destroying; destroying peoples lives and or their way of
living. Changing the person’s way of thinking and wanting to live. I think the
society decided to ban books instead of teaching the people the way of thinking
because they decided it was way easier for them to have them under control,
like a robot or pet. They thought it was a easier way out instead of having to
deal with changes and teaching the people how to think for their own.
Personally I doubt this will end up happening in our world, because in our
society we have “rights”. We have the freedom of speech, which is we have the
right to speak what we feel and what we believe. Also books have been going on
for quite a while now, and that’s part of our learning, we learn by reading
books and information that come from books. The book Fahrenheit 451 is a fiction book, everything is made up, and so I
really doubt that anything from the book will happen in our world, besides the
things we have now.
Hound (Tiyonna)
I think the mechanical hound is not
a good idea because it is not safe it is something that can hurt someone. The
hound is something that scares people so it’s suggesting that it is a monster.
A monster that can hurt people is what it is. I think this is a very dangerous
thing to have. The Hound is not ironic because it is mean it don’t show nothing
that would make someone want to have it as a monster. I think its ok to have a
monster but I also think that monster should be nice and trained. I would be
scared if I was walking and I saw that monster. I would be scared it is not
nice enough for me to go up to it and touch it. If the hound were people worse
friend I would understand and it would be ironic because they would be friends
with a monster. They would be having bad days all the time because the monster
would do bad things that they don’t like. I think that the monster would make
the owner lose a lot of their friends because it would be too scary. The hound
might seem nice but it can also be tricky because it don’t rescue people like it
suppose to .I think if you get a hound you should get ready to lose your
friends and a lot more stuff.
Irony (Evelin)
What does irony mean? Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that
normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Its
a used of sarcasm, comedy and just everyday conversation. Irony can have to
sided meanings you could either take it or understand it how it is or you could
just take it the wrong way. Irony can best be defined as the middle ground
between what is and what is meant. Like for example umm a person walks in a house
and say’s “there’s a big storm outside. But it’s actually very sunny outside.
Another example: A person who claims to be a vegan and avoids meat but will eat
a slice of pepperoni pizza because they are hungry. Groups or individuals in
our world who burn books or would burn books are like parents, church people I
think probably most of all Christianity people and Jewish people to. I think
that they don’t only burn books at of nowhere they burn specific books. Yes they
find the motivation in the book. The book is the bible. The bible is the reason
why a lot of people are doing a lot of crazy and bad stuff. Is it that bad? I wonder
why the bible is the one for people to do bad things.
Mechanical Hound (Lesllie)
My opinion of the mechanical hound is that I think it is
very useful but then again it isn’t because it is hurting someone that has no
reason to be hurt in that way. And well the good thing about it is that it does
work that us humans don’t want to do. I don’t consider it a symbol. Because
anyone could have a different picture of what it means and different beliefs of
what it really means. I do find ironic qualities in the hound because in our
world normally a dog is a guys everything or loyal friend who they can count on
of that is just someone too have around just so you wouldn’t get that lonely
feeling. But in the story it is it the total opposite it is used for killing
anything that is not doing what its suppose to and for it too do the humans
dirty work so us humans don’t have to get our hands dirty doing what they seem
to be taught to do. The hound could be a humans worst friend and there is irony
in that sentence because in our world is the total opposite , in the book they are
treat to kill and serve there owner or department and accomplish the job and
normally a dog is a great friend to any human being especially kids.
F451 & Irony (Kara)
Irony means the expression of one’s meaning y using language
that normally signifies the opposite typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Meaning the opposite of what someone says, for an example you walk outside and
its sorting and someone says “oh what a beautiful day” is the opposite of what
you said which is irony. In the book Fahrenheit 451 it is the firemen’s job or
motivation is to burn books it’s the law. Although it’s the law to burn books
some characters in the book such as Captain Beatty and Guy Montag doesn’t. To
me it is to burn specific books as captain Beatty mentioned that colored people
didn’t like a book “burn it” white people didn’t like a book “burn it” but even
though its specific books I don’t think any books exists in their society. I believe that it is irony people having
motivation to burn books because one of the books the fireman was supposed to
burn Montag stole it he did the opposite of what he was supposed to do. Also
with the old lady she know it’s the law not to have or own a book but she does
the opposite and keep the books and also die and burn away with the books. I
think Montag finds his motivation in a book and the book he find it in is “The
Hidden Book”.
Book power (Carolina)
I think Captain Beatty is saying that a book is like a
weapon; because of all the ideas a book can hold. In their society they have
been taught to fear books. Books hold the power; that the government is taking
away from people. In my opinion the ideas are the bullets and the book is the
gun. The books in their society may be a symbol of power. And what it seems
like their government is trying to make everyone just about the exact same, so
they’ll stop people from reading. If they read they’ll get ideas and from those
ideas they make their own and start thinking for themselves.
To me in
the book for why it was easier to ban books than to teach people to think; was
that maybe with their reliance on technology. With the people just relaying on
technology they stopped thinking for themselves, when they have all that
technology doing it for them. For example Mildred she doesn’t do anything but
watch the parlor walls, that’s all she ever does I thinks that’s all she knows
how to do. Once the books were banned they took control of the people because
they don’t think for themselves and probably don’t care about book anymore, that
was when their government made them fear books.
I can see
this happening to our society. People are starting to relay more on technology.
In school you see more technology being used and less and less books being used
as a source for education. There has
been books banned, and burned which are ways of censorship. I believe
censorship is another way of stopping ideas from being shared. With technology
advancing so fast, soon are society will be ruined by technology. Also like in
the book our society will be dumbed down, and wont think for themselves anymore.
We might even be controlled and have all books being banned.
